Our Timbers

Vic Ash

Vic Ash, Mountain Ash or Tasmanian Oak (as its more commonly known in the furniture industry) is a gum tree and its one of the tallest fastest growing living tree specimens in the world.

The timber is typically pale pink or pale straw in colour. The colour is consistent throughout the wood and there isn’t much variation between the heartwood and the sapwood.

Vic Ash Black

Vic Ash, Mountain Ash or Tasmanian Oak (as its more commonly known in the furniture industry) is a gum tree and its one of the tallest fastest growing living tree specimens in the world.

The timber is typically pale pink or pale straw in colour, we then stain it black. The colour is consistent throughout the wood and there isn’t much variation between the heartwood and the sapwood.

Blackwood

Blackwood trees can live for over 150 years and can grow up to 40m tall in the right conditions. They are native to eastern Australia, ranging from the Adelaide Hills, through Victoria and Tasmania and up the east coast to the Atherton Tablelands in northern Queensland.

Blackwood consists of heartwood and sapwood, which have very different appearances. Sapwood ranges from straw-coloured to pale grey, whereas the heartwood is golden to dark, sometimes reddish brown with deep brown to black rings.  Blackwood timber is valued for its strength and its dark rich colouring that it gets from the trees high level of tannins.

Red Gum

Australian River Red Gums have very long lives- they can reach up to 1,000 years of age. They grow along river banks and the timber gets its distinctive red colour from a chemical which has been used for medicinal purposes by Indigenous Australians.

The heartwood ranges in colour from light to dark red. The sapwood is distinctly paler in colour, a grey or cream-red that is distinguishable from the heartwood. A moderately coarse grain that is uniform in texture complements these rich colours.
